6-Year-Old in Police Custody After Shooting Teacher at Virginia School

A six-year-old boy is in custody following a shooting at a Virginia elementary school that left one teacher severely injured.

No students were injured during the incident that happened at around 2 pm at Richneck Elementary School, a statement from the Newport News Police Department said.

A female teacher was taken to the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, Police Chief Steve Drew said at a 5:30 pm news conference. Her injuries are still considered life threatening but the chief said that the last update he received said there was an improvement.

Drew confirmed that “this was not an accidental shooting.”

Officers arrived “within minutes” following a call about shots fired. Only one building was affected by the shooting.

All the students are safe and are being reunited with their parents after being taken to the school gymnasium.

“The main thing right now is we got all these kids safe and the number one priority for me is to check on our victim at the hospital and get all these students back with their families,” Drew said.

“We did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting. We had a situation in one particular location where a gunshot was fired,” Drew told reporters.
